Valentines Day Canmore
As we know Valentines Day is now associated with romance and the art of love, but it has more sinister beginnings. More Roman than romance. It is believed that during the reign of Claudius II, 270 A.D. as emperor , he was also know as Claudius II Gothicus. Claudius did not want men to marry during war time as he thought that single men were better warriors. Bishop Valentine went against Claudius’s wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on Feb. 14 It is said that while Valentine was in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor’s daughter, signing it, “From your Valentine.” Sound familiar?!
